Smaller calves. I don't prefer this option. He is to Ape-ish, even taking into account his slighter upperbody build. But for the sake of honest exploration of design options...

I like the ape body :)
I like this one too. I dig the hair in this one too. I like the pointing straight up bit. Kinda reminds me of the retro fin like adam strange. Personally I like the rounded edges on the face mask. The pointy ones seem a bit more super-hero less science fiction. I think it's looking cool! I'm excited to see this guy armored up and in 3D!
maybe he looks ape-ish to you because you made him look grumpy. :)
i don't think it looks bad at all. from a non-artist pov, anyway.
i like grumpy apes.
